      The cause you are supporting

Every membership helps keep this preserve wild: the deer, the owls, the cranes and the forest they live in, protected season after season.

A white-tailed doe looking out from the spruce at the edge of tall grass
A barred owl perched on a branch in the green canopy
A bumblebee on a goldenrod bloom against the dark forest
Two sandhill cranes and their colt in a flowering meadow
A scarlet waxcap mushroom glowing in a shaft of light on the forest floor
A young broad-winged hawk perched on a weathered fence post
A small fern holding beads of rain, close up
A husky resting its front paws on a fallen log in the forest

      A history worth preserving

People have built and wondered on this land for centuries. Membership keeps their traces standing, from the barns to the stone ruins.

Steve sitting on top of the great stone cairn in the autumn forest
The weathered grey barn gable with its wooden sun, surrounded by goldenrod
Inside the barn loft, a wooden chair silhouetted against the open hay door
The chinked log barn with the covered well in front, in evening light
The hand-hewn log walls inside the Burke House
The homestead outbuildings from above, with the wetland valley behind them
The barn peak under a sky full of stars and the Milky Way

      A note from Ranger Steve

It didn't make any sense when I bought 465 acres of wilderness north of Ottawa in 2015. I was living in upstate New York, twenty years into a career writing and producing music, and I came for a two-day camping visit with no intention of leaving any of it.

After two days of hiking, and paddling a raft through the Quyon Valley, I stood on top of the peak I now call Mount Bald, surrounded by the ancient structures, and knew this place had to be protected. A month later I was living in the log house the Burkes built in the late 1800s. No water, no electricity, nobody in it since the 1960s. It was never about the house. Ten years on, the mission is clearer than ever: protect this place by sharing it.

Membership is how that continues. If you join, come say hello. I look forward to seeing you here.
